Wrong Turn (2003)

Movie: Wrong Turn Synopsis: Six people find themselves trapped in the woods of West Virginia, hunted down by “cannibalistic mountain men grossly disfigured through generations of in-breeding.” Release Date: May 30, 2003 MPAA Rating: R Writer: Alan B. McElroy Director: Rob Schmidt Star Cast: Desmond Harrington Eliza Dushku Emmanuelle Chriqui Jeremy Sisto Lindy Booth Kevin Zegers What happens when you are running late to an business meeting? You take a short cut. What happens when you take a short cut in West Virginia? You get chased by gross looking cannibals. Wrong Turn shows why you don’t take the back roads in West Virginia. Wrong Turn starts out with a young couple going rock climbing when suddenly they are attacked and killed by an unknown force. Fast forward we are introduced to our main character, Desmond Harrington who plays as Chris Flynn. Chris, who is a medical student, is on his way to a business meeting when he is stopped by traffic. Realizing he is not going to get there in time by waiting for the traffic to clear he decides to take a back road. Chris stops by a gas station and the attendant tells him to take Bear Mountain Road. On his way down Bear Mountain Road he hits another vehicle. Now that both vehicles can’t move they decide to head up the road to find help. Little do they know the “help” is a group of three cannibalistic monsters. Who will survive on Bear Mountain Road or who will be supper? This movie has a The Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it. Although this movie is no where near the level of either movie it still holds its own. I’d say the best thing this movie did was the look of the three cannibals. They look as if they really look that way and it’s very scary looking. I love the chase in this movie as you never know what’s going to pop up or who’s going to die next. The part where they are in the field with the abandoned cars and the group tries to distract the cannibals to take their truck is an intense scene for me. If you take this movie for what it is it is very well done and spawned many sequels that are pretty decent as well. Where’d this movie go wrong? Well it’s a short movie and a third of it is spent setting everything up. When it comes time for people to die off it feels like their dropping like flies and the death scenes are lack luster. They did such a great job making the killers look scary they forgot to make the death scenes look amazing as well. Although at the end when he blows up their house that was pretty awesome! One other thing that got me as well is how does a guy that got shot and can barely walk move around in a tree so well? This movie is one any horror fan should watch at least once. The cat and mouse game and the look of the cannibals are great. Go rent this or buy it or if you have seen it before let me know. I give this movie a three out of five stars and definitely something to watch!
