The Amityville Horror remake starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George is pretty much a photo copy of the original. The original received a 31% and the remake received a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes but I think that’s an unfair score. Yeah the remake isn’t as good as the original but to me remakes never are. Also I felt like everything was well done and kept me engaged throughout the movie. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion I guess. Anyways, let’s get into this review.

Ryan Reynolds who plays George Lutz does a great job at playing the monster but at the same time playing the caring and loving husband. You can see from the beginning to the end the house slowly changing him into evil. Melissa George who plays Kathy Lutz falls in love with the house but George is skeptical on the price and wonders what the catch is. The realtor tells George and Kathy about the family being murdered in the house but George brushes it off as the house didn’t cause it. The acting is well done in this movie all the way down to the little girl who sees Jodie. Creepy.

One thing that aggravates me about horror movies is to many meaningless jump scares and this movie had jump scares that worked. They used story telling to get under your skin. When Chelsea was up on the roof of the house that had my heart racing. Or when the baby sitter was in the closet and couldn’t get out.

The problem with the movie? It copied to much of the original so you felt like you were just watching an update. Also the villains or ghosts just didn’t really look or feel scary. This movie should have brought a new look to Amityville Horror when all it did was make a photocopy. Again, it’s not bad and definitely a movie to check out but it could have been more.

I’ll give this movie a 3 out of 5 because overall it was a good movie and didn’t go crazy with jump scares. Go check this movie out just don’t expect to be wowed. A side note for the ladies, if you want to see Ryan Reynolds in no shirt then go check out this movie. Anyways, if your family moves into a house and your dad starts going crazy, the priest runs out scared, and your sister sees a ghost girl then get out! Thanks for reading!
