Poltergeist (1982)

Movie: Poltergeist Synopsis: A family’s home is haunted by a host of ghosts. Release Date: June 4, 1982 MPAA Rating: PG Writer: Steve Spielberg Director: Tobe Hooper Star Cast: JoBeth Williams Craig T. Nelson Beatrice Straight My favorite horror movie is Texas Chainsaw Massacre so seeing Tobe Hooper as director had me excited for this movie. I know it’s unheard of these days but a long time ago TV went off at a certain time of the night. Little did this family know that once the TV went to the static that demons would take over the house. A little girl is sucked into the demon world and the family can only communicate with her through the TV. The family decided to summon a paranormal team to figure out how to get their daughter back. First off the acting is well done and even stars some famous actors like Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams who have had successful careers. I had no idea until now that Craig voices Mr. Incredible in the Incredibles movie. One sad note is Heather O’Rourke, who plays Carol Anne, passed away at the age of twelve from cardiac arrest and septic shock caused by a misdiagnosed intestinal stenosis. Before she left us though she left us with the awesome line of “they’re here”. The movie is two hours long but Tobe Hooper does a great job at keeping you engaged. Steven Spielberg was unable to direct this film due to a clause in the E.T contract so he turned the reigns over to Tobe Hooper. The movie still has a Spielberg feel to it but I imagine he was impressed with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and felt Tobe was the best man for the job. The special effects in the movie are ahead of its time for 1982. It took a lot of special effects in this movie from the tree coming alive to the ghost coming down the stairwell. The only really cheesy part I can think of was when the guy is tearing his face off in the mirror but hey it’s still creepy. Overall this is a very well done movie. I’m into any kind of horror movie from slasher to paranormal and this one sets the bar for paranormal movies. I suggest going out and buying this one as it has everything you want out of a paranormal movie. For the first time in my reviews I’m giving this a five out of five stars. What are your thoughts?
