Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Movie: Friday the 13th 2 Synopsis: Mrs. Voorhees is dead, and Camp Crystal Lake is shut down, but a camp next to the infamous place is stalked by an unknown assailant. Release Date: April 30, 1981 MPAA Rating: R Writer: Ron Kurz and Phil Scuderi Director: Steve Miner Star Cast: Amy Steel John Furey Adrienne King Betsy Palmer Steven Dash Warrington Gillette With Mrs. Voorhees losing her head at the end of part one the famous slash killer Jason Voorhees takes center stage in part two. The movie starts out showing Alice sleeping in bed while it shows she’s dreaming about the events in part one. I don’t see the purpose of having this flashback because if you are watching part two then you should have watched part one. This drags on for a while and then later at the camp fire you get to listen to the story all over again. Anyways so Alice wakes up and we get a tour of her house before she opens the refrigerator, sees Mrs. Voorhees head, and gets stabbed in the head by Jason. Flash forward and Paul (John Furey) is setting up a camp across the lake to train counselors. Will Jason let them live or will the body count rise? The acting of this movie isn’t top notch but it is an improvement from part one. In part one I felt like the cast was just there for a body count not to actually engage in anyway. In part two they are engaging and feel like real people. Ginny (Amy Steel) did an amazing job as a final girl as you see her character progress to become stronger throughout the movie. Like I said not the best by any means but improvement is key. One of the downfalls I mentioned was how long it took to get to the movie as your watching snippets of part one. I will say though once the movie got going it stayed going. The pace and the suspense held up to keep you engaged if you hadn’t gotten bored from watching the rerun. Until the end though. Why do they have to have Jason bust through the window and then go to a scene where Ginny is being loaded into an ambulance asking for Paul? Have Jason bust through the window and then roll credits! By the way she has an excellent question, where is Paul? This movie left to many unanswered questions. There are some great kill scenes in this movie but Jason just didn’t have me convinced in this movie. The sack on his head just doesn’t do it for me like the hockey mask. I realize this is what got Jason Voorhees on the map but I’m just not sold on this one. All in all this movie is what jump started Jason and it’s probably about on par with part one. They kept some of the original sound effects and music which I love about Friday the 13th. There are things they could have done better but overall for a direct sequel it’s something to write home about if people still use that saying. If you are a horror movie and/or Friday the 13th fanatic go check this one out. I give part two a 4 out 5 stars. Happy Friday the 13th! What’s your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
