Friday the 13th (1980)

Movie: Friday the 13th Synopsis: A group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which, years before, was the site of a child's drowning. Release Date: May 9, 1980 MPAA Rating: R Writer: Victor Miller Director: Sean S Cunningham Star Cast: Betsy Palmer Adrienne King Harry Crosby Laurie Bartram Mark Nelson Jeannine Taylor Robbi Morgan Kevin Bacon Friday the 13th is about a man named Steve Christy who is working hard to bring Camp Crystal Lake back to life. The locals think he’s crazy because of all the strange things that have happened at what they call “Camp Blood”. While Steve is in town the counselors must figure out how to survive the unknown assailant who hunts them through the night. The acting is pretty decent considering most of the actors/actresses aren’t big names except Kevin Bacon (Jack Burrell) who has gone on to have a life long acting career. Betsy Palmer (Pamela Vorhees) does an extraordinary job as the killer. When she voices “Jason” and herself like they are talking to each other it will give you goosebumps. Some of the characters feel bland like they are just there for a body count. My least favorite part of the movie is the camera angles. The camera angle being used as the killer’s point of view was a great idea but sometimes it left me asking whether I was looking through the killer’s view or a regular camera view. Overall the camera angles were poorly done making some parts predictable. Although the camera angles weren’t the best I feel like the editing was well done. The scenes are well pieced together to keep the story going and not dead weight to pad run time. The music and sound effects are one of the amazing parts of this movie. The music gets your adrenaline going and the sound effects will make your heart jump. I suggest just listening to the music and sound effects and see that them alone can get your blood pumping. On top of that the special effects are pretty well done for 1980. They didn’t try to over do it and it looks pretty decent even to today’s standards. I would suggest all horror fans to not only watch this movie but own it as well. It’s a classic horror film that spawned many sequels and remakes but none compare to the first. Yeah Jason is not the killer in this one but it gives the Friday the 13th franchise something to build off of. I give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars. How would you rate the movie?
