Evil Dead (1981)

Movie: The Evil Dead Synopsis: Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. Release Date: October 15, 1981 MPAA Rating: NC-17 Writer: Sam Raimi Director: Sam Raimi Star Cast: Bruce Campbell Ellen Sandweiss Hal Delrich Betsy Baker Sarah York Five friends set out to have a camping trip in a remote cabin that they got for a bargain. Soon after arriving they find a mysterious book and some tape recordings of a man who previously found the book. Little did they know the book is demonic and chanting from the tape recorder set free the demons. Will they make it out unpossessed or will the demons have their way? First off I just want to say for a low budget movie this was done very well. A gross and comedic horror movie all rolled into one. Bruce Campbell who plays Ash does a phenomenal job at being the main character who has what it takes to survive but still has a human sympathy side to him as well. One by one his friends becomes possessed as he try’s to figure out how to survive and maybe save his friends. The setting in the movie will give you chills just thinking of being alone in the woods in an old cabin with nowhere to go. The storyline is one of a kind and is brought to the screen as a masterpiece. There are flaws with the movie of course but very minor. One that stuck out to me was when they arrive it’s bright outside and then when one of the characters goes inside it seems dark and then I cuts back to outside it’s light again. Very small indeed which is amazing with such a small, low budget movie. Back to the pluses. I loved the camera angles in this movie as it added to the creepiness and feeling you are there with the characters. Sam Raimi who wrote and directed the movie has gone on to have a huge career in the movie business. Another negative is I felt sometimes the movie was taking me in a circle and I didn’t know where it was taking me. I would say though that it wasn’t over the top and didn’t make it become boring to watch. I don’t want to give to much away but maybe you will be able to tell when you watch it or if you have watched it previously. The effects in this movie aren’t bad for a 1981 movie and the costumes and makeup look fantastic! I can’t find much wrong with this movie. It’s comedic at some points but still scary and gruesome enough to make your skin crawl. It has spawned sequels, a remake, video games, and a tv show. I would say that’s a successful movie franchise! If you are looking for a skin crawling and maybe a laugh here or there horror movie Evil Dead should be at the top of your watch list. I give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars for just the minor faults I found with the movie. Go check it out or the demons might take you!
